A Safari with Purpose – Join the Hwange Game Count 2025

A Legacy of Conservation in Hwange

Hwange National Park is one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas: an expansive 14,600-square-kilometer landscape home to one of the highest concentrations of elephants on the continent, along with a remarkable diversity of wildlife. But preserving this delicate ecosystem requires careful monitoring, strategic conservation efforts, and ongoing research.

For over 50 years, the Hwange Annual Wildlife Census, the longest-running game count of its kind in Africa, has been a critical initiative to track population dynamics, migration patterns, and species health within the park. Conducted by Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ) in partnership with conservation groups and park authorities, the census provides essential data to help safeguard Hwange’s fragile ecosystem.

For the first time, Amalinda Safari Collection invites guests to take part in this extraordinary conservation initiative, offering a special ASC Game Count Safari at Khulu Bush Camp, Sable Valley Lodge, and Ivory Lodge. This experience allows safari-goers not just to witness Africa’s iconic wildlife but to play an active role in protecting it.

Why the Hwange Game Count Matters

Conservation isn’t just about protecting wildlife, it’s about understanding it. The Hwange Annual Wildlife Census is fundamental to this effort. Conducted at the height of the dry season, when water sources are scarce and animals congregate at key watering holes, the game count relies on volunteers who observe and record every species that visits a designated water pan over a 24-hour period.

This data plays an essential role in conservation efforts by:

  • Monitoring population trends and shifts in species distribution

  • Assessing which animals rely most heavily on Hwange’s artificial waterholes

  • Tracking ecosystem health and detecting potential disease outbreaks

  • Influencing conservation policies that guide park management and anti-poaching efforts

Participating in this initiative offers the unique opportunity to contribute directly to wildlife conservation while gaining firsthand insight into the challenges and triumphs of protecting one of Africa’s most diverse ecosystems.

A Safari Like No Other: 24 Hours in the Wild

Unlike a typical safari, which lasts just a few hours, the Game Count Safari immerses guests in Hwange’s wilderness for a full 24-hour period. Stationed at a designated waterhole, participants track a diverse array of species, from vast herds of elephants and elusive predators to rarely seen nocturnal animals.

Morning to afternoon offers the chance to witness antelope, giraffes, and warthogs as they arrive for their first drink of the day. As the sun begins to set, predators start to stir, and the landscape transforms with the calls of night birds and the distant roar of lions. Through the night, guided by the moon and the quiet sounds of the bush, the nocturnal world comes to life. By dawn, the park awakens again with the sounds of the wild, marking the conclusion of an unforgettable conservation experience.

This unique adventure is available exclusively for guests staying at Khulu Bush Camp, Ivory Lodge, and Sable Valley Lodge.

The Official WEZ Hwange Game Count is scheduled for Monday 6th October 12pm to Tuesday 7th 12 pm (24 hours.)
